Arequipa
is known as the 'White City", it's given this nickname because
much of the City center is built of sillar, a white volcanic stone;
three volcanoes tower over the City: Chachani, Misti and Pichu Pichu.
Founded in 1540 Arequipa is filled with Colonial churches and mansions,
including Santa Catalina, a restored convent established in 1579.
Don't miss a tour to Arequipa's country side: Sabandia (8 KM a restored
mill with a spectacular view of the Misti and La Casa del Fundador
a restored mansion in Huasachaque. For birdwatchers, a trip down
to the lagoons at Mejia on the coast offers hundreds of bird species.
A
trip to the Colca Canyon is a must. Four hours off the city, a road
leaves Arequipa winding its way up between the Misti and the Chachani,
The Colca is the deepest canyon in the world, and its valley has
been anciently terraced. Breathtaking views and the occasional condor
complete the tour, tourist hostals at Chivay or Achoma make an confortable
overnight possible. Now near Yaque there are several lodges with
awesome views of the terraces, most of them whith hot springs, making
your stay memorable.
