For
the the Incas the quechua word Qosqo
meant "navel of the world," and they believed their splendid
City was the source of life and the capital of the fabled Inca Empire.
Most striking in Cusco is the superimposition and intermingling
of three cultures.
A
visit to Cusco without a pilgrimage to legendary Machu
Picchu is unthinkable, trains depart from Cusco daily for a
three to four hours ride and return in the afternoon, unless you're
staying on at an Hotel in the archeological site or at Aguas Calientes.
For those more adventurous can hike and camp on the Inca
trail, a four day trek.
Full
day trips through the Sacred Valley and to the colorful Indian market
of Pisaq and to the fortress of Ollantaytambo- where you can also
stay overnight at a cozy hostal and take the train to Machu Picchu
instead to return to Cusco - should not be passed up. From Cusco
excursions to Sacsayhuaman, the massive Inca fortress over looking
the city, Tambomachay, Puka Pukara and Qenqo can also be arranged.
